Aurora Chalet and the Northern Lights
The unspoilt village of Luosto is almost entirely surrounded by the fells of Central Lapland. This small ski resort offers genuine wilderness encounters but from the comfort of your own log cabin or one of two excellent hotels.
This trip aims to maximise the chances of seeing the Northern Lights. On arrival at the hotel you will be given a mobile phone and if the aurora appears in the night sky you will be alerted by text. We've included the Northern Lights Academy and three evening excursions. We can't guarantee that you'll see nature's spectacular light show but we'll do our very best to optimise your chances.
We must stress that the Aurora Borealis is a natural phenomenon and we can not guarantee that you will see them during your stay in Luosto. We also reserve the right to alter the above programme in response to local weather condition in order to maximise your chances of seeing the aurora.

Flights, arrivals and introduction
You will be greeted on arrival at Kittila Airport and transferred to the Aurora Chalet in Luosto. On arrival there will be a get-together when your guide who will outline the programme, distribute Northern Light maps of the area and hand out your "Aurora Alarms". These alarms are actually mobile phones. When the aurora appears in the night sky, the hotel is immediately advised by the Northern Lights Academy. The hotel in turn, sends a text to your mobile phone. All the bedrooms face north so with any luck you can even watch a display from your bed - not bad!
Monday
Snowshoeing
After breakfast you’ll be kitted out with your cold weather clothing which you can keep until the end of your stay. Then you make your first foray into the snow on a three hour guided snowshoe trek. Warm drink and a snack included.
This evening a short snowmobile-pulled sleigh ride brings you to a teepee where you’ll have dinner around a campfire. remember to pop your head out of the tent from time to time in case the aurora starts shimmering.
Tuesday
Snowmobile safari to "Aurora House"
You can have a leisurely morning and this afternoon your guide will teach you how to handle a snowmobile before heading off to the "Aurora House". Aurora House is a specially created teepee where you will receive a fascinating Northern Lights presentation. With luck it will be the Northern Lights that guide you back to Luosto.
Wednesday
Husky safari
You can’t come to Lapalnd and not try a husky safari. On arrival at the husky farm you will feel like you are about to meet a pack of baying wolves but once they are up and running the dogs really settle down to their task and there is no better way of admiring the winter scenery than from a husky-pulled sled. Sled driving time is approx 1 hour.
Thursday
Amethsyt mine
Europe’s only working amethyst mine enjoys a spectacular location on the summit of Lampivaara fell. You’ll learn how the amethyst was formed 2 billion years ago, take a tour of the mine and take home your own lucky amethyst as a momento of the day.
Friday
Free day and evening sleigh ride
The day is free to try additional activities or take advantage of Luosto’s ski slopes (payable locally). This evening, a snowmobile-pulled sleigh ride takes you to the best spots in Luosto for spotting the Aurora Borealis.
Saturday
Free day and Northern Lights snowshoe trek
Another free day to enjoy the many activities available in Luosto. Despite our best efforts it is still possible that you won’t have seen the Northern Lights.
This evening’s snowshoe trek takes you into the forest and well away from any light pollution. You can enjoy a warm snack and a drink around a campfire while gazing skywards. In a fair and just world, your endeavours will be rewarded with a spectacular multi-coloured display.

Aurora Chalet
The concept of Aurora Chalet is designed around the Northern Lights. It is a haven of peace and tranquility, perfect for combining winter activities with rest and relaxation.
This family run hotel prides itself on an exceptional level of service, an excellent menu and a great selection of wines in the cellar.
There are perhaps two things which illustrate the Aurora's approach, firstly there is a sauna in every one of the 28 bedrooms and secondly, a Northern Lights mobile phone alert service. A lovely place to stay. |
