Football in Costa Rica:-
If you want to make an impact on sport in Latin America, this is the perfect placement for you. Costa Ricans claim they have a love for football that surpasses all other Latin American nations. Many children are desperate to play in a structured team and dream of becoming the next Paulo Wanchope, eventually signing to a top European club.
Although this will remain a dream for the vast majority, as a football coach in Costa Rica, you can give a number of children the chance to play in an organised environment and develop in the game they love.
You will be attached to local schools (and some club teams) in the vibrant capital city of San José. Here you will become a coach and friend to aspiring footballers, mostly aged between 8-12 years old. This coaching placement is extremely impacting due to the power football has in crossing cultural boundaries. You will experience this firsthand as you build close friendships with your players. The main focus is on having fun, but you will certainly discover some natural talent among the players.

Working within the schools will allow you to coach and play with children from a variety of backgrounds, although the majority tend to come from poorer families. Furthermore, the schools give you a good structure and timetable during the placement, and you will soon feel a strong sense of belonging to your team and school. You will also work closely with Physical Education teachers to give you better guidance throughout the placement. Alongside the schools, you may have the chance to work with smaller community teams but this will depend on availability and training schedules, since club teams tend to meet only 1-2 times a week.
Your Role:-
Being a football coach in Costa Rica will mean you are responsible for running and supervising all training and matches for the school and/or club team that you are allocated. This may sound daunting, but you will soon realise that you have an understanding of football that the players are hungry for. You will also have local staff (e.g. PE teachers) to help you throughout your coaching placement. The rewards are great because the raw talent is often there but the experience of a team structure usually is not. By introducing the basics of team play, movement and position-holding, players will develop rapidly. Furthermore, because they are so keen to play anyway, your role as a coach is normally very straightforward and you will see that it is not hard to get a game going. You will also be encouraged to organise football matches, which can get very competitive! You will also find that football (among other sports) is often neglected in schools and that you really can make a big impact with a bit of dedication and enthusiasm. Furthermore, the new balls and equipment you take out will enable you to run worthwhile coaching sessions within the schools. This equipment is left behind when you leave, and so too are the friendships, discipline and team spirit that you will instill in your players. |

You will live in a homestay family where you will have a basic but comfortable room. Not only will you be given tasty local food and improve your Spanish language, you will form a close relationship with your family. Many of our past travellers have found it extremely hard to say goodbye to their Costa Rican family and we are sure you'll be the same. We also place our travellers in a close proximity of each other so it is easy to meet up in the evenings or during spare time. You will receive three basic but nutritious meals a day, often containing rice, beans and salad. |
