Lifeguard Instructor Training
The main role of a lifeguard is the prevention of in-water and on-land incidents. While the ability to save lives is of paramount importance, the ability to prevent life-threatening situations is also essential. Problems may occur at any time, so a lifeguard must be in good physical and mental condition at all times, especially in the event that they are required to pull someone from the water and perform rescue breathing, CPR and First Aid. Learning these key skills in South Africa could see you working at swimming pools, water parks and beaches around the world, allowing people to safely enjoy their favourite water sports.
The Lifeguard School is based in Port Elizabeth and is home to some of South Africa’s top instructors. These instructors have a wealth of knowledge and experience in the lifeguarding industry and are fully trained in emergency first response and first aid techniques. They will be responsible for all your training and personal development throughout the course, and they will also ensure absolute professionalism and competency during the work experience part of your training.

The lifeguard instructor course combines practical and mental training and you will sit exams (practical and written) to test and prove your knowledge. The overall lifeguard training course is split into two parts. The first part will see you train to become a competent lifeguard. The second part will develop your skills and knowledge to become a certified lifeguard instructor yourself.
Once you have qualified as a lifeguard, you will undertake work experience under the supervision of the Lifeguard School, and once you are a certified instructor, you help to train young South Africans to become lifeguards themselves. For extra fitness work, you will have unlimited access to the gym at the Lifeguard School in Port Elizabeth, free of charge.
The first part of the course is spread over two weeks and includes 40hrs of practical training with elements covering First Aid and CPR as well how to identify and react to an emergency situation. You will also sit a 1hr written exam and a 3hr practical exam. On completion, you will receive the Lifeguard Award from the official governing body of Lifesaving South Africa (LSA).
The second part of the course lasts ten weeks and will teach you how to instruct lifesaving techniques to trainee lifeguards. Plenty of practical work experience will also ensure you have the necessary confidence and understanding to be an instructor. On completion, you will receive the Lifeguard Instructor Award. An outline timetable is given below to give you an idea of the course structure:
