The Professional Beach Lifeguard Qualification will allow you to gain employment in Australia, South Africa, USA or the UK as a Professional Beach Lifeguard. Train in Manly, Sydney – the home of surfing and Beach Lifeguard operations in Australia. Your Instructors are a combination of leading surf athletes, Professional Lifeguards and Paramedics. This is the ultimate in ocean lifeguarding instruction and is a demanding Programme designed to produce men and women who are capable of working at the front end of this global leisure industry. Professional ocean lifeguard work requires an individual to be well trained, physically fit and highly motivated for preventing beach and water related accidents.
Lifeguarding in Australia
90% of all Australians live within 50km of the coast. As a result, Australian’s gravitate to the ocean on a regular basis and surfing is one of the most popular recreational pastimes. This combined with large swells and rugged coastline provides the ultimate training ground for Professional Beach Lifeguard instruction. The Australian summer lasts for seven months and at major swimming areas like Sydney and Queensland’s Gold Coast, the Professional Lifeguard Services operate dawn to dusk 7 days a week. This is the hotbed of Beach Lifeguarding and many of the men and women who patrol these areas are also the very elite of surf competitors both in Australia and around the world.

The Beach Lifeguard Programme
The Beach Lifeguard Programme is located in Sydney, capital of New South Wales, and is one of the top Beach Lifeguard Programmes in the world. The Programme is based in the Manly Life Saving Club – the most successful surf club in the history of the Australia Surf Life Saving Association – and will revolve around Manly Beach and Manly Swimming Centre. Applicants will also use the Gymnasium at the Club.
Alongside the outstanding facilities come some of the world’s finest coaches offering the latest in Lifeguard techniques and fitness training. It is this expert team of coaches and fitness instructors that will prepare you both mentally and physically to attain this qualification. Our aim is to develop you into a Professional Beach Lifeguard who is able to walk into any beach lifeguard service on the planet.
The Training Programme
On arrival, you will undergo an assessment of your strengths and weaknesses. This assessment will provide the foundation for your training Programme with the Instructors setting clear performance objectives. These goals will then be reviewed on an ongoing basis to track and push your development. Once your goals have been set, training will commence and continue over the following weeks. The Instructors will spend time with you, assessing and improving your ocean skills and awareness. This Programme will require from you a commitment to achieve mental and physical levels you thought unattainable and providing you with the tools to complete the course.
Development of your personal fitness is an essential part of the Programme. You will therefore undertake fitness and strength conditioning work at the gym, on the beach and in the pool.
You will also join the Manly Life Saving Club training Programme and train alongside elite young surf lifesavers. This will no doubt push you to improve key aspects of your skills base. This team training environment also helps create the close group bond and social life that the Programme is so renowned for. |

The accommodation is comfortable and situated in Manly. You will stay in a single, twin or dormitory style room with shared toilets and showers. The accommodation has a great social atmosphere and is only a short walk to the shops, restaurants and cafes in Manly.
Living in Sydney
Sydney is one of the finest cities in the world; and Manly, your home for the duration of your Programme is 7 miles from Sydney's Central Business District. Manly is the home of surfing in Australia, the first world surfing championship was held at Manly in 1964 and the winner of that championship, surf legend Midget Farrelly, can be found at the beach most mornings. Manly Beach is the first of 20 beaches that form the Northern Beaches of Sydney. The last beach is the famed Palm Beach where homes cost up to 20 million Australian dollars and the rich and famous spend their summers relaxing at the many restaurants and cafes.
For the Professional Beach Lifeguard this area, and in particular, Manly, is the heartbeat of this global leisure industry. Manly Lifeguards perform over 1000 rescues each year and the Professional Lifeguards are on duty 365 days a year from dawn to dusk. To gain employment amongst these elite men and women is testament to your status as a Professional Beach Lifeguard. You will, as part of your Programme, work alongside these men and women to gain a valuable insight into this profession and view firsthand the awareness and decision making skills that make this career so specialized.
Manly is a tourist town and is littered with many pubs, cafes and late night bars and restaurants. Just a 20 minute ferry ride from Sydney means that all of Sydney’s incredible experiences and sights are easily accessible. |
