Strength and Conditioning
Strength and conditioning is the physical and psychological development of athletes to make them stronger, faster, fitter and more flexible, as well as training them to become mentally sharper in order to perform longer in competitive environments. During the rugby programme, the strength and conditioning work takes place in a group environment but with focussed attention given to you as an individual athlete.
A professional coach will work with the group on the basic principles of strength and conditioning, but specific programmes will also be assigned to you personally in order to target your individual strengths and weaknesses as rugby player. This aims to ensure that you are working on the right area of your training at the right time, and therefore producing the highest level of performance. There are hundreds of specific exercises that your coach can assign you (plus variations), but the key areas include quick lifts, squatting, pressing, centre and upper body pulling, rotational work and abdominal exercises. Your strength and conditioning work will usually take place in the mornings.
Group Fitness Sessions
Another important part of the rugby programme is group fitness sessions. A professional fitness instructor will recommend certain activities based on what is best for your all round rugby development, as well as what you enjoy doing most! There is a range of different fitness activities to choose from including body combat, aerobics, body pump, circuit training, yoga, gym sessions and more. The main objective of these sessions is to increase your general fitness levels and recovery rates, especially when participating in your sport in a competitive environment. The fitness sessions during the rugby programme will usually take place in the afternoon.
Rugby Training and Matches
The final and most exciting part of the rugby programme is your time training at a local rugby club. You will receive instruction from professional coaches who will focus on developing both your technical and psychological approach to the sport. You will take part in regular team training sessions at the rugby club which involve practice matches and specific rugby drills to improve key areas of your game. Weekends will also see you play competitive matches for the rugby club that you are based at. This gives you the chance to play rugby in Australia while also enjoying a great sporting social life with your team mates. |
