Sipadan Island, Malaysia’s top diving destination and one of the top 10 diving destinations in the world, is 20 minutes’ boat ride from Mabul Island.
The underwater biodiveristy at Mabul, which is renowned for having some of the best macro diving sites in the world, includes rare species like frogfish, turtles, blue-ringed octopus, flamboyant cuttlefish and shrimp, moray eels, and numerous scorpionfish species.
Mabul Island is a fantastic place to go muck diving because of this. Non-divers will also enjoy Paradise Mabul and the nearby Kapalai, which have stunning beaches, a number of opulent beach resorts, and over-the-water hotels.
One of the top 5 dive destinations worldwide is Sipadan. A variety of endemic birds can be found on Sipadan, which is also covered in a thick rainforest.
In order to protect this exceptional marine and land ecosystems, all of the resorts on Sipadan island have been moved since 2005.
Since then, resorts on the nearby islands of Mabul, Kapalai, Mataking, etc. have brought tourists by boat.
A permit quota system was implemented in 2006, mandating that visitors to Sipadan obtain permits in order to dive or snorkel there.
