Splitboarding

Splitboarding is snowboarding’s answer to the growing popularity of ski touring. Using a snowboard that splits in half to create two skis you can skin uphill to access untouched snow. Splitboarding travel has become popular everywhere from the Alps to the Andes. So the big question is where to splitboard?

Over the last decade splitboarding equipment has advanced significantly. From a handful of companies providing pretty basic gear there are now lighter boards and bindings, specialist boots and a whole load more snowboarders getting involved.

Being able to travel uphill opens up a whole world of backcountry adventures. So splitboarding is all amount heading away from the pisted slopes to find fresh tracks. This can be on the edge of ski resorts to access difficult to reach powder, or in areas with no managed slopes at all.

Splitboarding is hard work, but at its beginner level it does not require many specialist skills. Of course if you are using it to summit mountains, head into dangerous terrain then other skills – and often a guide – are also required.

Going back to the question of where to splitboard, most people start off in a ski resort. Often just half an hour of splitboarding from the top of a lift you’ll find fresh snow days after the last snowfall.
