But what is windsurfing?

The sport is a fusion between surfing and sailing with experts being able to ride waves, get huge air and reach speeds of over 50 mph. Windsurfing began in the 1970’s and quickly grew to have worldwide popularity by the 80s.

Worldwide more than 20 million people windsurf as it is relatively easy to learn and progress. Beginners start on a larger board (offering more stability) and improve from there.

The real thrill of windsurfing comes from plaining, where the board picks up enough speed to skip across the water. This can take a bit of persistence to master – which is why windsurfing travel is so popular as you can go on holiday and hit the water every day.

Once plaining windsurfers can perform a plethora of tricks and manoeuvres ranging from easy to extremely technical. This means the sport always has something new to challenge you.

There is a great social scene involved with windsurfing as well as the chance to explore the world to sail in jaw dropping locations. If you want to know where to windsurf check out our top 10 articles for inspiration.
