Sailing

Very simply, sailing is the use of a wind powered boat to move on water. It is one of humankind’s most ancient forms of transport and still a hugely popular past time. With around 71% of the Earth’s surface being water choosing where to sail is tough. But this worldwide sailing travel guide will hopefully help!

You can find sailing holidays, courses and day trips. You can learn to sail, charter a yacht or take a dinghy out on your local body of water. Sailing encompasses everything from tall ships to luxury yachts and small dinghies to impressive catamarans.

Larger yachts are used for sailing travel, where you explore the coast either on your own, with a crew or as part of a flotilla. From Croatia to the Caribbean and crossing the Atlantic to circumnavigating Australia the world is your oyster. You can even gain qualifications on sailing holidays so that next time you don’t need a crew.

Smaller vessels such as dinghies might conjure up images of pottering around in low wind. But there is a whole other side to the sport. Modern boats can get plaining (skipping over the water) at high speed in relatively light winds. It is exhilarating and competitive with regular regattas held the world over.

Sailing is about pitting yourself against wind, tide and waves. But it also gives you a chance to see the world from a perspective landlubbers will never experience. Where to sail next? Use this worldwide sailing travel guide to help you decide.
