Boatmaster qualifications are increasingly becoming the standard for those wanting to work on Small Commercial Vessels in the Caribbean. These are known as SCV’s and are typically less than 24m in length. The IMO [International Maritime Organisation] developed a set of recommendations some years ago for training of captains in the Caribbean. This is now widely accepted by most Caribbean countries.

In Antigua & Barbuda certification is governed by ADOMS [Antigua Barbuda Department of Marine Services]

There are 3 levels of Boatmaster and the level you go for will depend partly on your experience but also the waters you plan to operate the vessel.

Course Content

Caribbean Boatmaster Course Grade 3 in Antigua

Candidates must be 18 years old and at least 3 months service on a vessel similar to the one they will skipper.
Acceptable for vessels with less than 12 passengers and no more than 3 miles offshore in protected waters.

3 day Boatmaster theory and practical US $550 Covering 1 day general theory, 1 day maintenance and fault finding and 1 day practical and assessment. Also needed is:
VHF Radio US $285
1 day PST/Sea survival US $245
1 day First Aid US $195
Total cost of the above is US$1235
You also need a medical examination from an ADOMS approved doctor, these are generally around $100usd. Finally there is a US $100.00 processing fee payable to ADOMS.
