Guide to Morocco trekking holidays

Morocco offers some of the most varied trekking in the world, from coastal routes through to desert hikes and the peaks of the Atlas mountains. It’s possible to combine all three terrains into a single trek and many routes aim to do this on a Morocco trekking holiday.

The Atlas mountains have long been a draw for European trekkers and many tour operators offer trips trekking up mount Toubkal – the highest point in Northern Africa. There are no shortage of experienced guides to book in Morocco and more than possible to self-guide.

Desert trekking in Morocco is very popular and often combined with a Bedouin experience. The trekking is generally easy as the camels typically carry all the luggage, and authentic treks with camel trains give you a great way to experience the traditional Bedouin life.

The most popular peak to ascend is Toubkal which is the highest peak in the Atlas mountains and offers stunning views from the top . Marrakesh is the main international airport for those trekking here with routes typically starting from Imlil about 90 minutes drive away. Toubkal is often combined with treks through Berber villages at the foot of the mountain to experience the distinct culture and cuisine of the Berber people.

Those embarking upon Morocco trekking holiday during the winter will find the climate more suitable for desert and coastal walks although Toubkal can still be summited, while in the summer it is best to take to the mountains to avoid the heat.
