Guide to La Gomera kayaking holidays

La Gomera is a fantastic place for a laid-back kayaking trip. This little island lies just off the coast of Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands. But with no international airport, it has a very different character to its bigger neighbour. Expect to find unspoilt beaches, pretty fishing villages and a relaxed vibe.

While La Gomera itself might be relaxed, much of its coastline is not. Expect to see some tall, rocky cliffs and some really tough sections of paddling alongside them. The swell and the jagged rocks can make La Gomera kayaking challenging, but very rewarding.

La Gomera is not just a destination for kayaking and canoeing experts, though. There is plenty of calmer water where beginners can find their feet and have fun. The island’s capital, San Sebastian, is a good place to choose as a base. There are several beaches to choose from, including a couple of popular beaches in the town, and some smaller more isolated beaches nearby. The surf in this area is usually gentle, making it easy to improve your kayaking skills.

Kayaking around the La Gomera coast, you’ll find plenty of natural beauty, on and off the water. Enjoy having the island’s smaller beaches and coves to yourself. Keep your eye out for dolphins and whales in the water. Pull up, and spend time swimming and snorkelling in the clear blue water. Take a fishing rod out and catch your dinner. If you have the skills to handle the open water, you can even take your kayak all the way over to Tenerife.

A La Gomera kayaking holiday is an opportunity to enjoy the ocean at its unspoilt best.
