Ski Touring

Over the last decade ski touring grown from a niche part of the ski industry to a hugely popular sport in its own right. Ski touring travel in now popular the world over with holidays everywhere from the Alps to the Andes. So the big question is where to ski tour?

But what is ski touring? Well it is also known as skinning, this is because the addition of skins to the base of the skis allows you to travel uphill. The sport is all amount heading away from the pisted resorts, often into the backcountry, to find untouched slopes to climb and then ski down.

Ski touring is hard work, a little more so than hiking, but at its beginner level it does not require many specialist skills. Of course if you are using it to summit mountains, head into dangerous terrain then other skills – and often a guide – are also required. But many people use it to head from the top of ski resort lifts to access previously unreachable powder.

Going back to the question of where to ski tour, most people start off in a ski resort. Skinning gives you access to so much more and you’ll often find fresh tracks days after the last snowfall.

But if you are serious about ski touring travel then the world it your oyster. From Scotland to Svalbard, Canada to Kamchatka and Austria to Australia, wherever there is snow you can skin into the mountains to find your own adventure.
