Trekking

Use this worldwide trekking travel guide to help plan your next trip. If you need inspiration to decide where to trek next take a look at the trekking holidays, experiences and articles below.

But what is Trekking? Well it is basically the same as walking and hiking but more hardcore. In the North America it is often called backpacking. Ultimately it involves self sustained hiking from one destination to the next usually carry gear for overnight camping.

Typically treks cover long distances over multiple days. This is often in mountainous or difficult terrain where you spend much time away from civilisation.

It is difficult to distinguish trekking from hiking and walking. But for the purpose of our site the trekking involves staying in a different place each night for multiple nights and, carrying all your gear away in the wilderness.

On the other hand walking is done from a set location that you return to each day and you are never too far from civilisation. Hiking is more hardcore than walking, often the same terrain as trekking and with long distances covered, but usually not overnight, or carrying full on camping gear.

Worldwide trekking travel is big business. Some iconic treks include Everest Base Camp trek in Nepal, the Inca Trail in Peru, trekking in the Jungles of Borneo or climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania the highest trekkable peak in the world.

Some treks will require a guide. Routes are often a long way from civilisation and whilst many trails clearly marked you will need maps and a compass. Trekking is an amazing way to explore wilderness around the world. Where to trek is the big question, which hopefully we can help to answer!
