Walking

Need some inspiration to decide where to walk next? In this walking travel guide we have inspirational articles, plus many walking holidays and experiences to choose from worldwide.

But what is walking? Obviously it is putting one foot in front of the other, we all know that. But for the purpose of this site it needs a bit more defining as it is very similar to both trekking and hiking.

In our opinion walking is from a set base that you return to. Trekking on the other hand involves staying in a different place each night and carrying your gear – often including camping equipment – between. Hiking falls between the two. You might do an overnight hike but it is not multiple days like trekking. A hike is usually on more difficult terrain, on tougher trails and/or longer duration than a walk.

Walks can range in duration from a few hours to full day. While on a walking holiday you might walk many days in a row, but you will return to the same base each day. Walking can be tailored to the ability of the participants and is a great family activity enjoyed by all ages.

You normally do not need a guide to go walking as paths are well maintained and trails clearly marked. If a walk requires maps and a compass then you have probably strayed into the realm of hiking – there is some crossover.

Walking travel is a great way to escape the towns and cities and to explore the countryside and wilderness. Where to walk next is the big question!
