Fiji is one of the South Pacific’s favourite holiday islands. It has all the cliché good looks you’d expect: white sand beaches, luxury resorts, clear blue seas. Inland, Fiji is mountainous and covered in lush forest. Fiji rock climbing is a sport still in its infancy, but the island does offer some opportunities for those determined to get out and explore some rocks.
Much of Fiji’s rock is crumbly volcanic conglomerate – hard and dangerous to climb. Which is a shame, as there are some pretty tempting rock faces around on the island. If you want to explore the island with your climbing ropes, make sure you ask around locally to see where you can find safe climbing spots.
Fiji’s coastline offers more opportunity to climbers than its inland mountains. There are some interesting limestone rock formations and cliffs around the coast, which could offer the chance to do some bouldering or deep water soloing. Climbing in Fiji is about being willing to take the initiative to find places to climb and be able to try something different! Fiji is a beautiful place to be, so while it’s geography does not make it a top climbing destination, it’s certainly worth the effort. Climbing with rainforest on one side and blue sea on the other is hard to beat!
For beginners and those looking for something more organised, Fiji now has a climbing wall. In the resort of Nausori, this large wall offers visitors and locals the chance to learn climbing skills and get some practice in.
A Fiji rock climbing trip needs a bit of resourcefulness and flexibility, and an open mind. You won’t find challenging technical climbs on Fiji. But you can have plenty of fun.
