Malaysia’s Kota Kinabalu lies on the Malaysian Borneo’s east coast, and is a major draw for tourists. It is a modern, friendly city that is a great base for travellers looking for white sand beaches and coral reefs. It is also a great base for paragliders. A Kota Kinabalu paragliding trip allows you to soar over beaches, rainforest and the slopes of the imposing Mount Kinabalu.
Kota Kinabalu is a busy, bustling city with a thriving commercial centre and plenty to see and do. It’s a good place to explore for a few days between paragliding trips, with fantastic food and a lively social scene. For most, though, it is the natural attractions outside the city that are its greatest appeal. Most paragliding sites are an hour or two’s drive from the city itself: it’s worth seeing if you can arrange a homestay or jungle lodge to get closer to the action.
Lohan, near Mount Kinabalu, is a great all-round paragliding site. You’ll fly over the lush green slopes of the Kota Kinabalu National Park, in easy winds that stay constant all year round. It’s an ideal site for beginners, but with opportunities for the more advanced to take on some cross-country flying.
For a really challenging flight, you can take off from the summit of Mount Kinabalu itself. You’ll need to climb it first, though, which is likely to take at least a couple of days. It’s worth it: you’ll then get to fly from one of South East Asia’s highest peaks, with incredible views over the forested valleys below.
Kota Kinablau is one of Malaysia’s most interesting destinations. Add in a Kota Kinabalu paragliding flight and a visit to the city will become unforgettable.
