Tenerife is one of the best-loved Canary Islands. It is a lively but friendly place, with great scenery and beaches. It is the beaches that hold most of the appeal for many of Tenerife’s visitors, but not all of them. Some travel to the island to grab an adrenalin fuelled adventure instead.
If you want to try a Tenerife white water rafting adventure, you might have to rethink. There are no rivers on Tenerife, or any to speak of on any of the Canary Islands. They are volcanic islands, and their volcanic rocks absorb rainwater and send it underground. As well as causing water shortages, this means there is no room for river sports on Tenerife.
That’s a shame, but it’s something that can be got around by using the sea as a playground instead. The most obvious second option is to try your hand at sea kayaking. You’ll still get to paddle through white water, and you’ll get to explore some of the island’s hidden nooks and crannies, too.
The rocky northern part of the island is the best place to kayak for those looking for a challenge, while the sandier beaches to the south will suit beginners. Guided trips are easy to find, and recommended: a good guide will know where the best spots to paddle to are. If you are lucky, you’ll catch a glimpse of dolphins as you paddle.
If sea kayaking’s not your thing, other ways to get wet include sailing, windsurfing and kite surfing. Or a mountain biking trip might just offer some of the rafting-style thrill. Whatever you choose, there are some great alternatives to Tenerife white water rafting trip around.
