Intro
If, like me, you’re enjoying the freedom of loading your e-bike onto the back of your car and heading out to explore new routes, you’ve probably realised it’s not always easy. I learned the hard way that getting two e-bikes onto a trailer isn’t as simple as it sounds.
And that’s not the only challenge: After some trial and error, I discovered three accessories for transporting e-bikes that make the whole experience smoother — not just for you, but for your bikes too.
I reached out to Thule, as I’d noticed they offer a range of accessories — and since they’re behind some of the best-known bike racks and carriers, it made sense to see what they had.
TL;DR (Quick Summary)
If you’re carrying e-bikes on a car rack, these 3 accessories will save you time, prevent damage, and make loading far easier:
- Loading Ramp – Avoid lifting heavy e-bikes by rolling them on.
- Bike Protector – Prevents scratches when bikes are tightly packed.
- Carbon Frame Protector – Essential for safely clamping carbon or delicate frames.
The 3 Essential Accessories
1.Thule Carbon Frame Protector
I really like the futuristic design of this accessory — there’s a clever toggle system that lets you tighten the protector exactly as needed. It’s easy to use, and I even use it on my non-carbon frames for extra reassurance and to provide a soft lining for the rack’s clamp.
Why it’s important for carbon frames
Thule states that you should only use this frame protector with a clamp that has a torque limiter. This is crucial for carbon frames because over-tightening can crush or crack the delicate tubing. The protector, combined with a torque-limited clamp, spreads the pressure evenly to keep your bike secure without risking damage.
(I think it’s fine to use with aluminium frames too — it’s just that with carbon, precise torque is critical.)

Key features:
- Price: £21.99 (RRP).
- Distributes clamping pressure to protect delicate carbon frames.
- Clever toggle system for quick adjustment and secure fit.
- Soft rubber padding prevents scratches and marks.
- Compatible with all Thule racks that use torque-limited clamps.
- Lightweight, durable design that also works well with aluminium frames.
2. Thule Bike Protector
With e-bikes being so chunky — especially with wide handlebars — fitting two of them side by side on a rack can be tricky. Sure, you could remove pedals or turn bars, but no one really wants that hassle, so they often end up squeezed together. That’s where these protectors come into their own.
The Thule Bike Protectors are solid, well-designed, and far better than my previous “solution” of sticking a rag between the bikes. Without proper accessories for transporting e-bikes your frames will lack protection, leading to a real risk of scratches and scuffs. In my case, it’s always the fork of one bike rubbing against the chainstay of another — not something I want happening on a long drive.

3. Loading Ramp
Loading an e-bike onto a rack is, without a doubt, the single most troublesome part of touring with e-bikes. Even with the batteries removed, lifting a 25kg+ bike into position is awkward — especially when manoeuvring one bike around another. More often than not, I found myself wrestling the bike over the rack from behind.
A loading ramp is a simple but game-changing solution if you’re off on e-biking adventure holidays. The ramp I used is the Thule Loading Ramp (there are a few to choose from) it’s light, rust-proof, and built to last. I did find it hard to get it to click into the rack and it’s essential you match up the rack with the ramp before you buy. Get this right and it makes rolling the bike into place far easier and saves your back from unnecessary strain.
