Guide to Europe windsurfing holidays

Windsurfing in Europe is very popular due to its long and varied coastlines offering fantastic wave and flat water windsurfing spots. Many of Europe’s best locations host international windsurfing events, while others remain hidden gems enjoyed only by those in the know.

The best Europe windsurfing holidays are located in the Mediterranean coasts of Greece, Turkey, Italy, France and Spain and the Atlantic coasts of Portugal, Spain, France, UK and Ireland. In the Med windsurfing is calmer, warmer and the wind is more seasonal then the Atlantic.

Those who prefer summer temperatures should head to the Greek island of Paros in July or August to experience the Meltemi wind creating excellent conditions for wave surfing on the coast and flat water speed windsurfing in the two large bays. Other great locations include Tarifa in Spain where winds rush through the Straits of Gibraltar.

For Northern Europeans looking for something closer to home then Sylt in Germany has great waves and winds despite an average temperature of just 8.5°C. Much of the Southern coast of England offer great windsurfing for those prepared to brave the cooler waters. Some of the best flat water windsurfing in the UK can be found in Weymouth Harbour’s sheltered waters.

The Canary Islands are part of Spain and Europe but geographically are located off the coast of Africa. They offer world class windsurfing due to pleasant year round temperatures and strong winds – locations such as El Medano in Tenerife are world famous. They are only a short budget flight away for most Europeans and offer a cheap break and reliable conditions
