Guide to Lake Garda kayaking holidays

Lake Garda is a beautiful place to get out on the water. The lake, in northern Italy, is surrounded by mountains and ringed by attractive towns and villages. The lake itself is clean and clear, with plenty of places to explore. Kayakers can take their craft around the water’s edge, exploring cliffs, rocks and beaches.

Lake Garda kayaking is mostly easy paddling on calm water. Kayaks and canoes are available for hire at resorts and towns all around the lake, so you can just rock up, choose your kayak and head out on to the water. Beginners should get some group instruction, though, before they travel out alone.

Lake Garda’s climate is warm without being oppressive in summer. The water and the high altitude help keep things mild. In winter, things can get chilly, with snow falling around the lake. Kayakers should head to Garda in the warmer months!

Kayaking and canoeing on Lake Garda is all about freedom to explore and enjoy this stunning corner of the world. The lake is a thin, fjord shape, having been carved out by glaciers. There are plenty of fascinating towns and sleeping villages to take in as you head around its shore. At the lake’s narrowest tip, Trentino Alto Adige is a historic mountain city with some great shopping and dining, and some lively local festivals. Sirmione lies on an attractive peninsula, with Roman ruins that make it one of Garda’s main sights.

Lake Garda also has islands that can be visited by kayak. The Isola de Garda is the largest, home to a spectacular palace. Other islands, such as the Isola San Biagio, are perfect if you’d like some peace and quiet away from the holiday crowds. Paddle up and enjoy a picnic on one of its beaches!

A Lake Garda kayaking holiday is a fantastic way to enjoy the water, whatever your level of experience.
