Guide to Spain rock climbing holidays

Spain is one of Europe’s top rock climbing destinations, with sites all over the country offering great opportunities for traditional climbing, sport climbing, bouldering and more. The country has a long coastline and a dry, often mountainous interior, creating lots of opportunities for climbers. A Spain rock climbing trip can be tailored to your needs and ability.

If you are a bouldering fan, then head to Albaraccin, in the east of the country. This region is packed with big sandstone blocks, overhangs and cracks. And they are all in the cool of a forest, around 900m above sea level. There is lots of good coastal bouldering in Spain too, especially on the northern coast.

Coastal areas are good for other types of climbing too. Sports climbers will find plenty of good routes, especially near the major holiday areas and islands. Most of this climbing is on limestone rocks and cliffs. The area around Barcelona is a well-known sports climbing area, with lots of inland and coastal routes to choose from. Further east, up into the Pyrenees, there is great climbing for both sports and traditional climbers.

There is some good climbing near the capital, Madrid. Some of it is limestone, some big granite slabs. Altitudes reach up to 1000 m. If you are based in Madrid, you can easily escape the city for a day’s climbing, and have a choice of hundreds of routes.

A Spain rock climbing holiday is usually best in the spring or autumn. The higher areas can be snowy and icy in winter, while many places will feel very hot and dry in summer. Whenever you choose to go, though, you’ll find just about any kind of climbing you want to do in Spain.
