Iceland has inspired the adventurous for many years and the island offers plenty of opportunity to trek into the wilderness. To best experience Iceland trek through the Arctic tundra on a multi day expedition – you will be rewarded with mountain peaks, gigantic waterfalls, glaciers, geysers, hot pools and if you are lucky you will experience the Northern Lights.

It is the otherworldly feel of Iceland that inspired Jules Verne’s ‘Journey to the Centre of the Earth’ and a multi day trek into the wilderness is the best way to experience this.

For those who prefer less extreme trekking Iceland won’t disappoint as there are plenty of organised treks around the fishing villages and fjords of the coast. These treks are easy to walk solo which is also a great way of discovering hidden gems that guided tours often miss. For those who prefer local knowledge but want to set their own itinerary should opt for one of the experienced private guides, most based out of Reykjavik.

If your travel itinerary won’t allow a multi-day trek, you won’t be disappointed as there’s are excellent day hikes available. Highlights such as the Northern Lights, trekking the Snæfellsjökull or Hoffell glaciers or Snorkelling in the volcanically heated waters of Silfra can be reached day trekking in Iceland.

There’s also many mountains and volcanoes that can be easily ascended in a day walk and round trips including the infamous Eyjafjallajokull volcano which brought flights across the Atlantic to a halt just a few years ago.
