The city of Dalaman lies close to Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, within easy reach of many of its most popular beach resorts. If you take a Dalaman scuba diving trip, you’ll be spoilt for choice of places to base yourself. Whether you’re a fan of bright lights and buzz, or you want to chill out among the lemon trees, you’ll find your place in Dalaman. More importantly, this area of Turkey has some of the best diving in the Mediterranean.
Turkey has great dive conditions. In the main April to November season, you’ll find water temperatures of at least 20 degrees, and visibility up to 30 metres. Turkey’s marine landscapes includes limestone caves, reefs, walls and some fascinating wrecks. You’ll often spot the remains of Turkey’s ancient civilisations too, with amphora and other pottery on the sea bed. Turkey’s marine life is varied and colourful, with turtles, barracuda, rays and grouper a common sight.
One of the best places to dive near Dalaman is Fethiye. The Aladdin’s Cave site is a dramatic wall that is covered in colourful anenomes and coral. It’s the perfect place for underwater photographers.
A little further down the coast is Kas, which has several great dive sites. The best is the Lighthouse, where you’ll find the wreck of an Ottoman ship and many amphorae. Experienced divers can also head to the Airplane wreck. This is a tough, deep dive – but is one of Turkey’s best.
In Alanya, you’ll find some great cave diving. The caves are easy to access, meaning they’re safe for divers without specialist cave diving qualifications. You’ll see some fascinating wrecks and amphorae among the caves.
