Crowds of thousands throng Spain’s beaches every year for sun, sea and sand. Many never make it off the beach. But trekkers know that there is another side to Spain. The country is a fantastic place for trekking, with routes across mountains, over cliff-tops, through semi-deserts and lush green valleys. Take a Spain trekking holiday and discover the best that this diverse, fascinating country has to offer.

The Pyrenees are the obvious choice for those who love mountains. They rise and fall over rocky peaks and green valleys. You can choose a tough trek, taking shelter overnight in mountain huts and climbing snowy peaks. Or you can keep it gentle, walking over flower meadows and past lakes.

If you want to climb mainland Spain’s highest peak, you’ll need to head to the Sierra Nevada. Mulhacen’s peak is at 3482m, and is covered in snow all year round. The views from the top are more than worth the climb.

For something a little greener, head to Northern Spain. Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia are known as ‘Green Spain’, and they live up to the name. Trek through lush valleys where you’ll barely see another soul, or climb the Picos Europa, Spain’s third highest mountain range.

In the south, you can explore wild semi-deserts. The Tabernas desert in Almeria has a real Wild West feel and a fascinating lunar landscape.

Or head the southern coast, where rocky hills drop down sharply to the blue of the Mediterranean, and its gorgeous beaches. Andalusia, Valencia and Majorca all offer great off-the-beaten-track coastal trekking.

A Spain trekking holiday offers the chance to explore one of Europe’s most diverse countries. From snowy peaks to white-sand beaches, you’ll find your place in Spain.
