Via Ferrata

Via Ferrata is an Italian phrase meaning “iron path”. They are climbing routes that use cables and steps to make them accessible to non climbers. Via Ferrata travel is popular in the Alps and elsewhere. If you want to know where to Via Ferrata then use the light blue destinations menu to find places to do the sport.

While the name is Italian in origin the activities origins are far broader. Fixed ropes/cables, steps, ladders and bridges have been used in the Alps (and other places around the world) by locals for hundreds of years.

Modern Via Ferrata routes began with the growth of Alpine exploration and tourism in the nineteenth century. They allow people to climb steep mountain paths and passes without the need for specialist climbing equipment or knowledge.

Many routes date back to those used by locals and have been in place for many years. Via Ferrata travel gives you the chance to explore some of the most stunning scenery in the world from a position you’d otherwise be unable to access.
