An Argentina overland trip is the perfect way to see this hugely varied, exciting and often remote country. You’ll need to travel 3,650 km if you want to make your way from the country’s southern tip to its northern border: there is plenty to see and even more to do in Argentina.
Argentina’s capital, Buenos Aires, is a place where you can dance all night in tango bars, walk streets surrounded by multi-coloured houses, take a long look into Argentina’s colonial past, and party your way into its future. The coastal city is a buzzing place where cultures meet and play together in its spirit of hedonism. It’s a great starting point to any overland trip through Argentina.
For a complete contrast, head north into Argentina’s often wild northern region. Iguazu Falls, on the border with Brazil, is one of the world’s most spectacular waterfalls. It falls up to 80m in a perfect semi-circle and is surrounded by a huge sub-tropical national park covered in wildlife packed rainforest.
Then, take the road less travelled and head to the Andean region of the north-east, near the borders with Peru and Bolivia. Visit the colonial city of Salta, with its calm squares and cathedrals. From there, you can take the ‘train into the clouds’, an incredible feat of engineering over a desert canyon. Take some time, too to explore the ancient Incan villages that cling to the hillsides.
You can’t miss Patagonia when you visit Argentina. Explore the long, rocky Atlantic coastline, where penguins gather on the beaches and fishermen haul in tasty catches day after day. The region’s highlight is the Parque Nacional los Glaciares, a heart-stoppingly beautiful region of mountains, lakes and glaciers.
An Argentina overland trip will take you into some of the world’s wildest regions, both natural and man made.
