Asia is home to some of the world’s favourite windsurfing spots. This sprawling and diverse continent is a fantastic place to hit the beach, with white-sand, blue-sea paradise harder to get away from than to find. If you want to windsurf, you’ll be hard-pressed to find many more picturesque places to do it than Asia. Here’s our guide to the best of Asia windsurfing.
Asia’s top destination for windsurfers has to be Boracay. This Filipino island has some of the world’s best beaches and some of its best windsurfing. Winds get up to 30 knots in the November to April high season, and a reef keeps the waves away from the beach – so you can choose between swell and super-fast flat water.
South-East Asia has several great spots for windsurfing. Thailand is a popular choice, both for its windsurfing and its much-celebrated culture. On the Andaman Coast, the island of Phuket catches some great winds and has good, varied conditions. On the Gulf of Thailand, Pattaya is just a stone’s throw from the capital Bangkok and is home to the national windsurfing team.
Further north, Vietnam’s Mui Ne beach is one of the windiest places in Vietnam, with windsurfing possible all year-round. Winds get up to 40 knots at times, and there are some great wave spots. In Indonesia, Sanur Beach is a favourite, with a nice lagoon and waves for those who want them.
Taiwan is a great but unexpected (for some) windsurfing destination. The Penghu islands attract international visitors, with lots of great spots and reliably strong winds from October to May.
