Guatemala lies right in the middle of Central America, bordering Mexico to the north, Belize to the east, and Honduras and El Salvador to the south. It has some beautiful beaches on the Pacific, and several large inland lakes. Explore them on a Guatemala windsurfing trip.
Guatemala’s lakes are its biggest draw for windsurfers, with Lake Aitilan, Lake Izabal and Rio Dulce all offering some stunning rides. While you won’t find much in the way of waves, you will find plenty of wind. The best time to go is between October and May.
Lake Aitilan is the windiest of the of the three, with speeds up to 25 knots in the windiest months of November and December. The lake is a large volcanic crater up in the highlands, and the backdrop is spectacular. Sail across its deep blue waters, surrounded by brooding volcanic peaks. When you know that it has been called ‘the closest thing to Eden on earth’ by the Lonely Planet, you’ll know why you need to go.
Lake Izabal lies at a lower altitude, surrounded by lush tropical vegetation. It connects to the east with Rio Dulce. While you won’t get the high-speed thrills that you will at Aitilan, you will get stunning windsurfing.
Guatemala’s coast is not known for its wind, but it does have waves. If you’re there in the windier winter months, you might just get lucky. If not, join the surfers! Another option is to head north into southern Mexico, where there are some great windsurfing spots. Punta San Carlos, near the big resort of Playa Carmen, is particularly renowned (and challenging).
