Guide to Azerbaijan scuba diving holidays

Azerbaijan lies on the shores of the Caspian Sea, bordered by Iran to the south and Russia to the North. It is perhaps best known for its oil production, but of course, there is much more to the country than that. While it is not a holiday destination, Azerbaijan’s large expat community has helped to establish infrastructure for many water sports, including sailing. Sadly, the Caspian Sea is polluted and not ideal for diving, so it’s unlikely that we’ll see Azerbaijan scuba diving operators opening up.

It’s possible to dive near Azerbaijan, though, by travelling to neighbouring countries which have coasts on other waters. In Iran, there is a well-established dive industry operating in the Persian Gulf. You can also travel west into Turkey for diving in the Mediterranean.

In Iran, the island of Kish is the main diving centre. It is a popular place to be with travellers, with relaxed laws, a friendly feel and some great beaches. The waters around Kish are home to coral reefs, wrecks and some really spectacular marine life. Diving is generally shallow and accessible for beginners as well as more experienced divers. Kish is said by some to be one of the world’s best dive locations: it’s certainly worth the journey.

In Turkey, travel south to the town of Kas. The area around this chilled-out little beach town offers some of the Mediterranean’s best diving. You’ll find extensive and colourful diving on wrecks and reefs, and in caves. Some diving can be had on the northern Black Sea coast too, but it is restricted by regulation.

Travel into Turkey or Iran for an Azerbaijan scuba diving trip, and you’ll find some of the world’s favourite dive spots.
