While the Bahamas is made up of over 700 islands, only a handful are inhabited. Those that are have great infrastructure, with some fantastic beachside hotels, and plenty of watersports operators. Larger hotels will often rent out equipment and arrange lessons for those who need them.
The windiest time to visit the Bahamas is during the winter months, when speeds get up to 25 knots. The summer months offer much more gentle winds with speeds of around 10 knots. Even in winter, temperatures are in mid-high twenties. The main rainy season is May to October.
New Providence is the Bahamas’ largest island and home to its capital, Nassau. It’s a bustling and friendly place fringed with beaches. It’s the ideal place for windsurfing beginners to get started, with easy access to lessons and equipment hire. There are also some great spots to be had, with excellent flat water sailing along the north coast. Wave sailors should head west to Lyford Cay. Grand Bahama is another good choice, with easy access to hire gear and lessons.
