Crete is one of Greece’s most popular holiday islands. It is a gorgeous, beach-fringed paradise, with friendly resorts, plenty of cultural interest, and an attractive countryside. Whatever you choose to do in Crete, it would be difficult not to enjoy spending time there. Take a Crete white water rafting trip, and you’ll enjoy it even more.
Crete is not the first place that springs to most minds when it comes to white water rafting. But away from its beaches, Crete is mountainous, with the highest peaks reaching up to 2500m. Where you have mountains, you often have gorges, and it is at the Ha Gorge that most of Crete’s white water rafts are paddled.
The Ha Gorge lies on the island’s eastern side, and is one of Europe’s most beautiful gorges. The gorge is well worth visiting for its own sake, with wild-looking rocks, narrow openings and waterfalls. White water rafters need to head slightly downstream, where the gorge opens out a little. You’ll raft past 300m high walls of rock, which the water pushes through relentlessly and fiercely.
The Ha Gorge is not Crete’s only white water spot. The Samaria Gorge is another good choice, although it is not quite as spectacular as Ha. It is still pretty impressive, narrowing to as little as three metres and with some dizzingly high rock faces. It is possible to switch to a kayak and keep on travelling the river all the way to the sea from the Samaria Gorge.
A Crete white water rafting trip is an incredible way to experience some of the island’s most dramatic scenery. If you want to do more with your visit to Crete than sunbathe, white water rafting is for you.
