Guide to Cuba rafting holidays

Cuba is one of the world’s most politically contentious states, and until 1997, tourists were not allowed outside their resorts. But times have changed, Cuba has opened up, and travellers are free to roam and explore. The country’s beach resorts, with their sparkling white sand and warm waters, are a big draw; as are the bustling streets and faded grandeur of Havana. But for those with a spirit of adventure, Cuba’s jungles and mountains are part of the attraction too.

A Cuba white water rafting trip is a fantastic way to explore the country’s lush interior. Away from the beaches, Cuba is a country of rolling hills and rugged mountains. White water rafting has only recently become established on its mountain rivers, but it is growing in popularity all the time.

The Rio Toa is Cuba’s longest river and the main spot for rafters. It runs through the Baracoa region, one of the most beautiful on the island and a popular destination with travellers in-the-know. Its name means ‘land of water’, because of its many rivers and high rainfall.

The Toa rises in the hills of Baracoa, and falls down towards the sea, creating rapids as it goes. Rafters need to head to its upper reaches – it widens and flattens downstream, although it stays fast-flowing along its length. There are more challenging rivers to raft than the Toa, but it’s interesting enough to have fun on. And a trip down the Toa is not just about the rafting: enjoy the wildlife, the forests and the coconut groves as you go.

A Cuba white water rafting trip is a fantastic way to do something more than just sit on a beach in Cuba. If you want to see the best of this beautiful country, get out on the river.
