Guide to Greece surfing holidays

The Greek islands are one of the most beautiful places in the world. The Cyclades archipelago in the Aegean sea contains roughly 220 islands, including the heavyweights Naxos, Paros and Santorini. These islands are a shimmering palette of blue and white steeped in some of the world’s most fascinating history.

Though if you were planning on a Greece surfing holiday you might find yourself slightly disappointed. The Aegean sea plays host to a huge amount of tourists in the summer months but it isn’t a body of water known for its waves. There are a few spots to be found on some of the Islands, notably Apollonas on the island of Naxos – a gentle little beach break suited perfectly to big boards and small skills.

Another island spot to keep an eye out for would be Tinos’s Kolimbithres – as inconsistent as it is unpronounceable but when it gets waves they’re a sight for sore eyes. The best surf in the Aegean is arguably found in Volos Agios Ioannis Port, also known as Poseidon’s, a fast hollow little right hander facing east off the mainland.

The Ionian sea has been known to offer its own bounty of Greek surf, with mainland spots such as the mostly chest-high Krioneri or Lourdas Beach with its slightly larger dumping wave. Though the Ionian has some reasonable waves it wouldn’t be enough to draw me away from the Aegean’s superior beauty and charm.

Unfortunately a Greece surfing odyssey is not going to be as epic as it sounds. The more prudent water lovers out there might decide to indulge in the far more consistent winds that batter these Hellenic seas with a bit of kitesufing or windsurfing. Even if there is no surf in sight a trip to this enchanting country will not be regretted.
