Guide to Merida scuba diving holidays

Merida is the capital of Mexico’s Yucatan region, the peninsula that sticks out into the Caribbean Sea. It is a vibrant city with an attractive historic colonial centre. It is also the starting point for adventures across Yucatan, both on land and underwater. How about a Merida scuba diving trip?

Merida is a great place to be for divers of all levels. The tropical Caribbean waters are full of coral and fish, and just about anywhere you go you’ll find some great dives. There are some especially unusual features of Merida’s coastline too which make it extra-special.

There are several sink-holes around the Merida coast which make great places to dive. They are small, deep limestone sided lakes, which often flow out underground to the sea. They usually have very clear waters, and offer the chance to see some fascinating underwater rock formations. They also often give access to caves. If you are a cave diver, you should head to Calcehtok. This is an underground cave system with a 5 km underground network.

The best ocean diving in the area is at Alacranes Reef, out in the Gulf of Mexico. This is a group of five small islands, surrounded by coral and wrecks. Visibility is fantastic, and the coral seems to stretch out for miles in a maze like formation. There are over 600 species of fish on the reef.

If you are looking for a Merida scuba diving trip, you have plenty of options. The area around the city offers some really spectacular and unusual diving. The area’s sink-hole diving is something completely different, and the ocean diving is stunning.
