Essaouira is the centre of Morocco’s windsurfing scene, and deservedly so. This attractive, ancient port town has plenty of charm, as well as a huge white sand beach (said to have inspired Jimi Hendrix’s Castles in the Sand).
Essaouira is a great spot for beginners and the more experienced windsurfers. The gentler morning winds and easy beach starts are perfect for those still finding their feet. In the afternoon, the winds ramp up to challenging levels. Essaouira’s main wave spot has some lovely, long waves, with a flat water spot at one end of its bay. Perfect!
25 km along the coast from Essaouira is Moulay. This is one of Morocco’s best wave spots, with waves up to 2.5m, especially in the winter months. Moulay is not a place for beginners, but experienced windsurfers will love it. It is a relaxed, traditional town where you can absorb some culture on a Morocco windsurfing holiday.
Dakhla is perhaps the best all-round windsurfing destination in Morocco. The town, on the edge of the Sahara, is beautiful, wild and windy. There is a large, blue lagoon that is perfect for beginners and improvers, as well as flat-water speed-freaks. Outside the lagoon, waves reach up to 4m, making Dakhla a real challenge for wave sailors.
