Guide to Netherlands windsurfing holidays

Jutting out into the North Sea, the Netherlands has no shortage of water. While its waters can’t compete with destinations further south for inviting warmth, when the wind gets up (as it often does), the Netherlands can offer some great windsurfing conditions. Take a Netherlands windsurfing journey – you might just be surprised.

Windsurfers in the Netherlands need to compete with wind farms and industrial ports for sea space. But if you know where to look, you’ll find some lovely little spots where the wind blows strong and the water is clean and empty.

Take a look at Brouwersdam, perhaps the best spot in the Netherlands. The famous Dutch dikes help create perfect flat water conditions for beginners and freestylers on the shore side, with the option to head out into wilder waters beyond them for some jump and bump. The wind can be really strong, especially in winter. Sandy beaches and dunes lie along the coast: perfect to chill out on after a ride.

Westkapelle, a busy tourist area on the coast of the Zeeland region, is a popular spot with surfers and windsurfers. The area offers some of the best waves in the Netherlands, and attracts people from around the country and beyond to ride them.

Many other beaches around the Netherlands’ coast can be great for windsurfing, especially in winter when the wind is at its strongest. The country also has plenty of lakes that offer some good conditions, such as Lake Veluwe. There, you’ll find reliable winds and great countryside views.

Take a Netherlands windsurfing trip and explore this friendly, windy corner of Europe from the water.
