Guide to Oman windsurfing holidays

Oman is the surprise star in the Middle East’s windsurfing scene. With a long Arabian Sea coast, it is less protected from the wind than many of its neighbours. Oman draws windsurfers from across the Middle East, as well as from Europe. They go for its hot, dry winds, seemingly endless beaches and welcoming vibes. This is what you’ll find on an Oman windsurfing trip.

Oman’s windsurfing is at its best during the summer months, when winds can blow up to 40 knots at some spots. Temperatures can soar at that time too, and also reach into the forties. But when you’re out on the water with the wind in your face, you won’t care…

Masirah Island is the go-to destination for many windsurfers in Oman. It’s pleasantly cooler than the mainland, and has some great spots to choose from. The high wind summer season coincides with the monsoon, creating some impressive swells that wave-sailors will love. There are also some lovely flat lagoons where beginners can learn in safety. Masirah is just 18 km from the mainland, so while it has no airport, it is easy to reach by ferry. If you can, hire a car and drive it over – then you’ll be free to explore some of of the island’s beautiful wild beaches under your own steam.

Masirah is at its best in the summer. In winter, the place to be is Sawadi Beach, a short drive north of the capital Muscat. Sawadi is a luxury resort that is a favourite with scuba divers. The winds aren’t as strong as on Masirah, but they’re usually good enough to sail.

Take an Oman windsurfing holiday and you’ll get to discover one of the world’s best-kept windsurfing secrets.
