Slovenia is often overlooked in favour of larger neighbours including Italy and Croatia. But this Central European country deserves more attention. Izola is the best spot on the Slovenian coast. It is an attractive medieval town that has become something of a centre for Slovenian watersports. In spring and autumn winds can get as high as 35 knots, although they are usually a little more gentle than that. Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj are among the largest and biggest lakes in Slovenia. Both are well set-up for windsurfing, with gear hire and lessons on hand.
