Sotavento lies at the southern end of Fuerteventura. The island is a haven for watersports fans, especially windsurfers and kitesurfers and it has the best conditions of any of the Canary Islands, catching the strongest winds. It also has a fantastic atmosphere, with many of its visitors travelling there for watersports, rather than just to lie on a beach. Take a Sotavento kitesurfing holiday, and you’ll find yourself in one of the world’s top kitesurfing hotspots.

Sotavento’s beach is huge and uncrowded. There are a few laid-back beach bars and a few sunbathers. But it’s nothing like the busy holiday beaches found elsewhere in the canary Islands. That means there’s much less chance of accidentally running into a swimmer or snagging a sunbather with your kite!

The wind is more reliable in Sotavento than anywhere else in Fuerteventura. It is at its best between April and September, but good all year round. Sotavento is perfect for kitesurfers at every level. There is a safe, shallow lagoon where beginners can find their feet and catch their first wind. Intermediates and experts will love the fast, flatwater spot that will test even the most experienced. It is home to the Pro Kite World Tour contest – which must tell you something!

The water gets choppier the further offshore you get in Sotavento, and waves up to six feet high are not unknown. Bigger waves are to be found further north, around Corralejo and Cotillo. Autumn and winter are the best times to catch big waves.

Sotavento kitesurfing holidays have it all. You’ll get world-class conditions with consistent, strong wind and an easy introduction to the sport for beginners. If you want big waves, you won’t need to travel far. Sotavento is both fun and challenging for kitesurfers.
