Unsurprisingly for a country on the scale of the US, there is no shortage of marked hiking trails. Some of them stretch for thousands of kilometres and many different landscapes. Many of them are in, or travel through, the country’s impressive national parks.

The longest trail is the coast-to-coast American Discovery Trail, coming in at a frightening 10,943 km. It begins in Delaware and ends in California, passing through fifteen states and fourteen national parks. Some of the trail travels through towns, but much of it is through wilderness, from forests to mountains.

The Appalachian Trail is the most celebrated of the American trails. It runs down the ridge of the Appalachian mountain range, from Maine to Georgia. It’s a fascinating journey along the country’s eastern side, travelling through wilderness nearly all the way, and covering some of the range’s highest peaks.

If you don’t want to follow a trail, you can just set off with a compass into a national park. In Alaska’s Denali National Park, you’ll find yourself trekking over the vast tundra, with caribou and brown bears. In Yosemite in California, you’ll see some of the most spectacular canyons in America, along with lakes, mountains and forests. In Florida’s Everglades, you can explore 10,000 square kilometres of swamps, though you might want a guide to keep you safe from alligators!

We could go on and on but this is just a brief guide so we can’t tell you about all United States trekking destinations here… Check out the more detailed blog pots and keep coming back as we are adding new content all the time.
