5-Day Northern Parts of Ethiopia Multi Activity Tour in Africa: Itinerary

Day 1: AddisAbaba –Bahir Dar
From Addis, you’ll take a one hour flight north to Bahir Dar. You will be welcomed by your guide from Ethio vacation Tours. Your guide will accompany you on a boat trip on Lake Tana, Ethiopia’s largest lake. To Visit some of the peaceful monasteries nestled on the islands and peninsulas around the lake and, if you are lucky, wander through coffee plantations, enjoy some of the local brew and meet local farmers. As the monasteries were used for religious retreats, the lake and its islands serve as an unofficial nature reserve. Look out for white pelicans and ‘air breathing’ catfish. Your boat tour will end at Zege peninsula. There is a short path walk towards UraKidrane Mehret, arguably the most beautiful of all the churches at Lake Tana, with hundred-year-old. Afternoon 1 hour drive to the Blue Nile waterfalls. These 42 meter falls create such large amounts of spray that they are known in Amharic (Ethiopia’s official language) as ‘Tis Abay’ meaning ‘Smoking Water’, which can soak you from a kilometer away. A short distance down the Blue Nile lies a stone bridge built in 1626: potentially one of the famed seven stone bridges built by the emperor Fasilides. This river and another, the White Nile, are the two main tributaries to the Nile, the world longest river… Blue Nile flows Here from Lake Tana Ethiopia & Wight Nile from Uganda..finally they meet at Sudan Khartoum…then flow together as Nile longest river in the world.

Day 2: Bahir Dar — Gondar
An early morning drivetakes you to Gondar, the old capital of the country. Your first stop will be Debre Berhan Selassie Church, whose heavy and unassuming stone facade hides the colorful frescoes inside. After this you will head to the well-preserved Fasil Gebbi in Gondar, described by some as the ‘Camelot of Africa’ for a guided tour. Now known as the Royal Enclosure, this was initially founded in 1636 and built by Emperor Fasilides as his home, but successive emperors and rulers added to his blueprint. Now, the buildings span over 70,000 square metres of land and include palaces, libraries, two lion houses, royal baths, and a women’s vocational school built by Mentewab, the Empress of Ethiopia. Within the enclosure there are multiple architectural styles and influences jostling for position. The influences include Indian, Portuguese, Moorish and Aksumite.

Day 3 Gondar –Sankaber:
You will depart early morning from Gondar to Debark. In debark you will arrange your visit with the park office and receive a scout and guide then drive into the park to arrive at Sankaber. You can either drive all the way in to Sankaber or have the car drop you off near BuyitRas for a short hike. If you choose to hike in you will take in beautiful views of the landscape and the endless mountain ridges, and you likely see some gelada baboons. When you arrive in Sankaber you will be met with your supplies. Sankaber will be the first campsite on your trip.

Day 4 Sankaber
From Sankaber you will begin hiking following the ridge and look out over the foothills 800m down. From the ridge you will descend down into the valley and be able to view the Jinbar River plunging into the Geech Abyss. After some time at the waterfall you will continue on to Geech village where you will find your second campsite.

Day 5 Gonder
Today’s hike will average about 6-7 hours. Many hikers agree that the route from Geech to Ambaras is the most magnificent hike the simiens have to offer. In route you will pass through ImetGogo. Here you will have reached an altitude of 3,926m and be able to look out at the amazing landscape from 360 degrees. At this height and view point you can see the canyone below, distant ridges, and view the seemingly never ending valleys. Here you will break for lunch and hike the rest of the way to Ambaras where you will be met by a car to bring you back to Debark/Gondar….. The Tour can be Continue to Lalibela,, per your request.
