With the exception of pot noodles (during my student days) it has been around 25 years since I last tried freeze dried food….
It was on a rainy scout trip in the New Forest, we had walked for miles and were camping in the middle of nowhere. I was very hungry yet did not eat what Arkela had ‘cooked’ as it was a powdery flavourless mush. Only the sweets and chocolate hidden in my sleeping bag got me through the trip.
I recently came across Fuizion Freeze Dried Food and was impressed with their claim to provide gourmet freeze dried meals.
Using only the best ingredients each Fuizion meal contains around 650 calories but weighs just 110g. The aim is to provide the highest level of nutritional content without compromising on taste.
I was impressed with the menu offering dishes from around the world such as an All Day Breakfast, Chicken Jalfrezi, Coq au Vin and Lamb Tagine to name but a few.
At £6.50-£6.99 per meal it is not cheap in comparison to a supermarket meal but it is competitive in the freeze dried meal market.
They say the proof is in the pudding, or in this case the main course, so I ordered 3 dishes to try it for myself.
First up was a Chicken Dhansak with rice. I love curries, I make a good curry myself and regularly get Indian take away or eat out. First impression was that the Dhansak was full of flavour, not quite as spicy as I like but it was hot enough and had a good depth of flavour – I certainly would not have thought it was freeze dried.
Next up was Thai Green Chicken Curry, this too came with rice. Having spent a lot of time in Thailand and this being my favourite Thai dish I felt it was a good test of Fuizion food. As with all good Thai food the individual flavours were prominent and surprisingly the vegetables were still crispy and tasted very fresh.
The final test was Kung Po Chicken with Noodles. This is not something I regularly eat but I was very impressed with the flavours and I would not have been surprised if someone had told me I was eating take away. I ate this after a 15 mile mountain bike ride and it filled me up which is a good test of taking Fuizion Food on a physical trip or expedition .
Although none of the food was as good as a top restaurant it was very tasty and better than super market ready meals. It felt much healthier than take away food and if I was blind tasting the food I would not have thought it was freeze dried.
Of course Fuizion Freeze Dried Food are not trying to compete with restaurant or take away food. Their customers are cooking meals in locations where they can’t phone for a curry or nip out for Chinese. That I am even comparing the food to a restaurant is testament to the flavour and quality of the meals.
