With gap years and career breaks more popular than ever, more and more people are looking for unique and life changing experiences. If you’re looking to do something special with your life, is a lengthy beach break enough? Anyone can lounge around on a beach for twelve weeks, but once the sun has set, is a bit of a tan enough to show for your experience?
Why not try and do more with your precious time away? The guys at Surf Berbere, Taghazout may have come up with the answer with their twelve week surf instructor course in Morocco. Offering participants the chance to leave behind the humdrum of the rat race and start living the dream life of a surf instructor.
Be warned the experience you have with Surf Berbere could change your life. Have a read of this personal account by Mark of his time on the 12 week surf instructor course in Morocco.
Why learn to be a surf instructor?
Working in the sun, travelling all over the world and, most importantly, doing something you love, it’s no wonder the courses are becoming more popular. It’s the only course in the world like it. You won’t only become a fully qualified surf instructor, but you’ll also help out the community, learn a language and become part of the Surf Berbere team.
The excellent international surf instructors will teach you everything you need to know from the basics of surfing up to ASI level 1 surf instructor skills.
Work with the best surfing instructors
Towards the end of the course Nick Thorn – one of the UK’s top surf instructors – flies out to oversee the assessments and award the successful candidates with their ASI and SLS (lifesaving) qualifications. It’s an intensive ten days working closely with Nick to learn the final health and safety aspects of surf instruction. You also get to show off your new-found surfing abilities.
Check out the week seven video blog.
The ASI requires students to have undertaken 25 hours of teaching before they can become fully qualified. It can be difficult for newly qualified instructors to find a surf school that will take them on. However, Surf Berbere have a fully functioning surf school where students can work to get their 25 hours under their belt as soon as they’re ready.
Why our course is more than just surfing
This isn’t just a standard surf instructor course in Morocco. At Surf Berbere, we believe in sustainable development and giving back to the community. We work closely with “Aftas” association, a charity that teaches English to the local community. Twice a week our students take English classes so that the local children and adults can learn English, an important skill as tourism booms in Morocco. TEFL qualifications aren’t required, however, they may help.
Teaching a whole class by yourself may seem daunting but by the end of course our students have usually grown in confidence. Many of them even say it’s the most rewarding aspect of the whole surf instructor course.
Learning another language while surfing
Morocco is a bilingual country speaking both a form of Arabic and French. Throughout the twelve weeks, the students also have two hours of French classes a week, taught in the beautiful Berbere tent overlooking the Atlantic. It certainly beats the classrooms we remember from school
There are plenty of chances to practice your French around the camp too. All our staff speak French and there are plenty of French TV and radio stations to tune in to.
Travel on your surf instructor course in Morocco
After the assessments are all completed, the students go on a well-deserved break travelling around Morocco. Surf Berbere will take you up to the beautiful fortified town of Essaouira. With its rich history and booming fishing industry, you’ll have plenty to do and see on this stunning coastline. Majestic Marrakech is also on the itinerary. Stay for a couple of nights in a stunning riad hostel and experiencing the sights, sounds and smells of one of the worlds most charming and beautiful cities.
