Kayaking in Europe is well developed and paddlers are spoilt for choice with the largest number of equipment hire centres and kayaking schools in the world . There’s great diversity of kayaking from sea kayaking in the warm Adriatic or cool waters off Shetland, to white water rivers kayaking in the Alps and other mountain ranges. There’s something to suit all kayakers no matter what they’re skill level.
Scotland remains one of the most popular kayaking destinations due to its extensive lochs and magnificent coastline. One of the most popular river kayaking destinations here is the River Spey which offers great wilderness and starts easy but offers more challenges as it heads towards the sea with grade two rapids making it perfect for more experienced canoeists.
Those looking for somewhere a little warmer to go river kayaking should head to Slovakia where the River Dunajec runs through a 10km long gorge in a national park with limestone cliffs and unspoilt natural beauty.
Of course we shouldn’t forget France which is host to some of the best river kayaking in Europe. Our favourite destinations is the River Ardèche where you’ll find great natural features such as pebble beaches combined with medieval towns and even a limestone arch.
Those who prefer sea kayaking have some of the best destinations in the world too. The Isles of Scilly off the coast of Cornwall offer great sheltered conditions between them along with Atlantic swells for more experienced kayakers. Another great place for Atlantic sea kayaking is Shetland off the coast of Scotland where you’ll find sea caves with collapsed roofs to explore.
For those who prefer warmer waters head to the Greek Islands, most of which have excellent kayaking facilities and the ability to island hop between them. Or alternatively consider Croatia where you’ll find stunning natural beauty and uninhabited islands along the Adriatic coast.
