Azerbijan’s capital city, Baku, is the best place to head to start a sailing trip in the country. The city lies on the Caspian Sea, and sailing clubs and yacht hire businesses do operate out of Baku port and across Baku Bay. While Azerbijan might not be a conventional place to get out on the water, it is certainly possible.
Azerbjian has a sizeable western expat community, and the country’s sailing scene generally sits within it, as Azerbjian is not usually a tourist destination. This does mean that chartering a yacht can be more difficult than in more established holiday locations. But with a little bit of research and a willingness to ask around, you can get out on the water.
The Caspian Sea is an attractive and rewarding place to sail. It’s important, though, to make sure you have good local knowledge or a guide, especially if you plan a longer trip, as yacht sailing is not a common activity. Remember too that facilities for sailors can be limited, so plan ahead.
The Caspian Sea is almost, but not quite, landlocked. It’s possible to travel in or out via Russia’s Volga-Don Canal, which links the Caspian Sea to the Black Sea. The political situation in the area can be unstable – so check before making a trip across international borders.
