Cuba overland holidays & tours

An island isn’t exactly the first place most travellers think of when asked to described a typical overlanding holiday, but if we forgive the relative small size Cuba offers great opportunities for a driving adventure. Self-drive or as part of a Cuba overland tour a road trip is a great way of experiencing the ‘real’ Cuba.

While those used to overlanding an entire continent may find Cuba small, it’s one of the largest islands in the world and can easily offer a great fortnights driving holiday. Most fly into Havana which is located towards the Western end of the island and is where the largest selection of rental vehicles are available.

Havana is also the most developed part of Cuba, so most will head out East in their vehicles towards the largest expanse of the country. Those on longer trips shouldn’t forget the small part of the island to the West of Havana.

Suggesting driving itineraries exist, but most overlanders will prefer the adventure of not knowing where their drive will go each day. Cuba overland is brilliant for this as the real adventure here is meeting locals rather than sightseeing. It’s easy to get lost in the spirit of the island, perhaps pretending your taking part in the revolution alongside Che and Fidel.

There’s lots to see even from inside your vehicle with 1950s cars and buses alongside donkey carts sharing the road. You’ll be driving alongside beautiful beaches, green hills with waterfalls and mango trees with ripe fruit. Those travelling in summer will spot farmers working the fields and well as locals enjoying their sun on the beaches.
