Guide to Bulgaria skiing holidays

Bulgaria is a ski destination with big ambitions. Like other countries to the east of the Alps, Bulgaria has traditionally suffered an image problem when compared to its competitors in France, Austria and Switzerland. But infrastructure is improving, with new lifts, snow canons and accommodation being built. A Bulgaria ski holiday offers good skiing and good value.

Bulgaria has three main resorts, Borovets, Bansko and Pamporovo. Borovets is the older resort, with skiers attracted there since the end of the nineteenth century. It is just an hour away from Sofia Airport. Borovets has around 58 km of piste, with plenty of blue and red runs, and a few blacks. The resort has three separate ski areas. Plans are in hand to lift-link them, creating a new ‘Super Borovets’.

Bansko is a newer resort, which has been carved out of the forest in the stunning Pirin Mountains. It has 70km of piste, and a nice long run right from the top of the mountain all the way home. Like Borovets, it is more of a beginner and intermediate resort than a challenging resort for experts, although there is some nice off-piste to be had.

Pamporovo is a small resort, with 18km of piste. It is a fantastic family-friendly resort with good infrastrtucture and a friendly feel. There are some other small resorts which are good for weekend breaks, such as Chepalare and Vitosha.

Wherever you choose for your Bulgaria ski holiday, you’ll find great value skiing and top-class instruction. All the Bulgarian resorts are perfect for beginners and families looking for affordable skiing. The atmosphere in the resorts is friendlier and more relaxed than in many Alpine resorts. Off the slopes, you can explore the rich Bulgarian cuisine and in Bansko and Borovets, enjoy a lively nightlife. With resorts expanding and modernising, now is a good time to try skiing in Bulgaria.
