Mauritius lies in the Indian Ocean, about 2000 km from continental Africa. The island is understandably popular with paragliders, who get to fly off its rocky cliffs and jungle-covered mountains, over sugar cane fields and colourful little villages, and down to its white-sand, palm-fringed beaches.

There are paragliding sites all over the island. Take-off points are mainly from the mountain ranges in the north, south-east and west of the island. Rocky peaks climb out of the jungle, with views all the way to the sea. You’ll find a popular site just outside the village of Pamplemousses, near the capital Saint Louis. It’s a big attraction for cross-country flyers, who fly over the mountains and then back again.
