Uganda is an East African country with a huge amount to see and do. It has a varied landscape with high mountain peaks, wide rivers (including the Nile), and a whole host of plant and animal life. What Uganda does lack is any coast – it’s landlocked. So does that mean a Uganda scuba diving trip is out of the question?
You might have difficulty finding somewhere to dive in Uganda itself, but there is some great diving to be had not far away on the coast of Tanzania. Uganda does have Lake Victoria, the world’s second-largest lake with an enormous surface area of 68,000 square kilometres. Sadly, it’s not a good dive spot. Parts of the lake are polluted with raw sewage, and much of its native marine life was killed off by the introduction of Nile perch.
Don’t give up on a Uganda scuba diving trip. The coast, with its very dive-able waters, is not that far away. Tanzania is a fantastic place to dive, with some of the best diving in the Indian Ocean. And that’s saying something! Head to the island of Zanzibar, where you’ll find coral atolls and all the colourful Indian Ocean fish you’d expect, and varied diving with some great drift dives. Visibility can be as much as 100m. Or head to Pemba Island for deep dives down to 40m and sharks!
Uganda is one of Africa’s most fascinating countries, with its huge snow-capped mountains, rainforests and gorillas. And when you when you feel the call of the sea, a Uganda scuba diving trip just means hopping on a short flight to Zanzibar, for some world-class diving.
